What is “Right to Choose”?
Since 2018, all patients in England have had the legal Right to Choose their provider for NHS mental health services, including for ADHD and Autism (ASD) assessments.
If you’re facing a long wait for an NHS assessment, this means you may be able to choose an alternative NHS-approved provider in England, completely free of charge.
Who can offer Right to Choose assessments?
- Clinics across the UK that provide NHS-funded assessments for ADHD and/or ASD can be used.
- These must already be NHS providers – private-only clinics are not eligible.
Limitations to be aware of
- Some clinics offer only diagnosis, not medication management.
- If medication is required later, a further NHS referral under a Shared Care Agreement is Mandatory between the specialists and the surgery before we can prescribe any ADHD medication in primary care.
- Unfortunately, Woosehill Medical Centre does not agree to any shared care for ADHD with Private Clinics that fall outside of the Right to Choose pathway. You can find our policy here.
Why choose Right to Choose if medication isn’t included?
- A formal diagnosis can be vital for educational, workplace, or personal adjustments, even without medication.
- Some individuals may benefit from diagnosis without needing pharmaceutical treatment.
Who is eligible?
You can request a referral under the Right to Choose if:
- You are registered with a GP in England
- You are aged 16 or older (some services also support children – please check)
- The provider offers NHS-funded services (not private-only services)
- Your GP agrees that a referral is clinically appropriate
Who’s not eligible?
Right to Choose does not apply if:
- You need urgent or emergency care
- The chosen clinic cannot appropriately treat your condition
- You are in prison or certain secure settings
- You are detained under the Mental Health Act
- You are currently serving in the armed forces
What kind of services can I choose?
- ADHD and ASD assessments
- NHS-funded services that are regulated and follow national standards
- Providers who offer shared-care agreements for ongoing medication (e.g. methylphenidate, atomoxetine)
How to make a Right to Choose referral?
- Speak to your GP – Ask about making a referral under the Right to Choose.
- Choose a provider – Your GP can help identify approved NHS providers who offer ADHD or ASD assessments. Right to Choose Providers for ADHD Assessments
- Referral is sent – Your GP will make the referral directly to the provider of your choice. Please note that some providers may request that patients submit the referral first and then contact their GP for any further information.
We recommend researching the provider beforehand to check that they:
- Are accepting new referrals
- Offer the care you’re seeking
- Have NHS contracts (as not all private clinics qualify under the Right to Choose)
