Care.Data and the GP extraction service

LATEST UPDATE ...

Following concerns expressed by professional and patient bodies, NHS England has postponed the introduction of the care.data programme from April 1st until Autumn 2014 to allow more time to build understanding of the benefits of using the information, what safeguards are in place, and how people can opt out if they choose to.

NHS England is Commissioning a modern data service from the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) on behalf of the entire health and social care system, known as care.data.

This information is important as it enables the people who plan and manage the NHS access to a full picture of the care being provided to patients so that they can make sure that the NHS is providing the best possible services to all of its patients. Sharing information can help improve understanding, locally and nationally, of the most important health needs and the quality of the treatment and care provided by local health services.  HSCIC will only ask for the minimum amount of information needed to help improve patient care and the services provided.

Care.data service does not need to extract your whole GP record. Only the minimum amount of information required will be used. The type of information shared, and how it is shared, is controlled by law and strict confidentiality rules.  Information such as your postcode and NHS number, but not your name, will be used to link your records in a secure system, so your identity is protected.

If you are happy for your information to be shared to help improve services, you do not need to do anything.

If you do not want information that identifies you from being shared outside your practice, let us know by printing the patient opt out form. This will prevent your confidential information being used other than where necessary by law (for example, if there is a public health emergency).

Patients who have previously opted out of the Shared Care Record (SCR) and still do not want data being shared by care.data will need to complete the HSCIC Opt-Out form as well.  However, should you no longer object to sharing data please contact the surgery.
